The sensor has a stroke pick-up core which moves with the valve spool (4). The core is arranged in the inflow region of an inductive arrangement. An analysis circuit drives the inductive arrangement (5,6) with an alternating voltage and measures the tuning of the inductive arrangement caused by a change in position of the valve spool. The inductive arrangement is combined with capacitors (7,8) into a second order circuit and is driven by an alternating voltage. The inductive arrangement may be formed of at least two coils (5,6) arranged next to each other in the direction of movement of the valve spool. Each coil is connected in series with a capacitor. The phase shift, between the measured voltages between the connection points of the coils and the respective capacitors, can be analysed.
