Process for preparation of organodisilanes

A one-step process for organodisilane prepn. comprises: (i) contacting Mg metal with a mixt. comprising: (a) diethylene glycol dibutyl ether; (b) an organic halide of formula (I); and (c) a halodisilane of formula (II) at 0-250 [deg] C. R1X (I) R2aSi2X6-a (II) R1, R2 = 1-20 C monovalent hydrocarbon gp.; X = Cl or Br; and a = 0-5. Also claimed is a one-step process for hexamethyldisilane prepn.
