Disclosed are the compounds of formula I <IMAGE> (I) wherein R and R1 together with the chain to which they are attached or R1 and R2 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a ring; pharmaceutically acceptable prodrug derivatives and pharmaceutically salts thereof; methods of preparation thereof; pharmaceutical compositions comprising said compounds; and a method of inhibiting matrix-degrading metalloproteinase and of treating matrix-degrading metalloproteinase dependent conditions in mammals using such compounds.
