The suction control valve comprises a spring assembly (11) which is formed with varying stiffness along the spring movement path. The spring stiffness with an open valve (5) is smaller than that of the closure piece (29) in the region of the closure position of the valve. The spring assembly consists of a helical spring (36) in which the inclination of the spring windings differs over the length of the spring. The helical spring may have windings which exhibit a variable diameter or cross-section. Alternatively, the spring assembly can be a plate spring with a progressive spring property characteristic curve.
