The unit de-aerates and dries oily or oil-containing fluids. The de-aeration vessel (1) is subjected to reduced pressure and has a high fluid inlet (2) with a low outlet (10). Inside the vessel is a fluid distributor (3), a microwave heater (8) for the fluid, and a packed column (6) below the distributor (3). Heating of the fluid is carried out to assure de-gasification in the upper part of the column at lower temperature. Higher temperature is produced lower down the column. Novel features include the vessel wall apertures (9) introducing externally-generated microwaves into the vessel. The column (6) packing comprises an electrically non-conductive material.
