PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve strength and roughness by depositing a nonoxide glass powder on a flat ductile metal powder to prepare a glass composite powder, compacting the composite powder, and then sintering. SOLUTION: A composite powder is prepared by mixing 2 to 60vol.% ductile metal powder having 1 to 200μm particle size and a nonoxide glass powder, and the obtd. powder is subjected to plastic deformation to obtain flat particles to obtain a glass composite powder. The obtd. glass composite powder is compacted into a desired form and sintered at 200 to 700 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere or in vacuum to obtain a glass composite material having the nonoxide glass as a matrix and the flat ductile metal as the reinforcing phase.
