A process for the preparation of low-solvent alkyl diketenes of the general formula: <IMAGE> (I) in which R1 denotes C10-C30 alkyl or C10-C30 alkenyl and R2 denotes hydrogen or C1-C8 alkyl, by causing carboxylic chlorides of the formula II <IMAGE> (II) in which R1 and R2 have the aforementioned meanings, to react with tertiary amines of the formula III <IMAGE> (III) in which R3, R4, R5 denote C1-C12 alkyl or C3-C12 cycloalkyl and R3 and R4 together denote a C2-C11 alkylene dichain optionally interrupted by oxygen or nitrogen, in a substantially water-immiscible, inert solvent, wherein distillation is carried out at temperatures ranging from 80 DEG to 130 DEG C. and pressures ranging from 10 to 500 mbar and subsequently with the addition of water or steam.
