The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of formula <IMAGE> (1) wherein R1 is hydrogen, C1-C4alkyl or sulfo, and R2 is hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl, which process comprises reacting a compound of formula <IMAGE> (2) wherein Hal is halogen and R1 has the meaning given above, with a compound of formula <IMAGE> (3) wherein Y is a saponifiable group and R2 has the meaning given above, to give the compound of formula <IMAGE> (4) wherein R1, R2 and Y have the meanings given above, and saponifying the compound of formula (4) to give the compound of formula (1). The compounds of formula (1) are suitable for the synthesis of dyes.
