A method for inserting a protective core into the space (1c) inside the middle of a spirally wound roll (1) of sheet metal, which is lifted by a forklift truck in order to lift the roll, comprises using a machine (10) close to the roll to bend a board (20) made of eg. wood, hardboard, Masonite (RTM) or plastic into a tube and then inserting it into the space in the middle of the roll. The tension of the board causes it to expand and press against the inside of the roll. The board material is strong enough for the core not to bend when the roll is lifted. The machine used for this method is also claimed, comprising a support frame (11) for the board and two rollers (31, 42) for feeding the front end of the board into and around a curved track with at least one glide shoe. |
