Microbiological breakdown of easily volatile chlorohydrocarbons in contaminated ground water, surface water and process waste water, in bioreactors, involves (a) ascertaining the presence, in the water to be treated, of bacteria breaking down chlorohydrocarbons, (b) culturing local or specialised laboratory strains of bacteria for inoculation of the bioreactor, (c) appln. of the inoculum onto solid carriers in a bioreactor corresp. to the construction of a filter for treating drinking water, and (d) addn. of mineral nutrients, prim. substrates and O2 carriers (electron acceptors) to the water to be treated, to make possible the formation of biomass needed for the complete breakdown of the chlorohydrocarbons. ADVANTAGE - The process is simple and economical.
