An apparatus and method for sensing a concentration of oxygen. A biasing voltage is provided across a zinc-air cell (101) so that the zinc-air cell produces a current having a magnitude, wherein the magnitude of the current corresponds to the concentration of oxygen. The cell comprises a zinc anode (201) in a casing (207) with gas ports (203) to permit the entry of oxygen to act as a cathode.
