<p>A protocol simulator (73) for simulating open system interconnection (OSI) layers (3-7) of a plurality of communications protocols and utilizing the OSI layers to test selected ones of a plurality of target systems connected to a network (79). The protocol simuolator (73) includes a selection menu for selecting one of the plurality of target systems to be tested. The target system may be either a target hardware node (71) or an emulated target node (72). A plurality of protocol simulation software blocks (76) simulates OSI layers (3-7) of a plurality of different communications protocols, each of which is associated with one of the plurality of target systems. A protocol simulation adaptor (75) selects the protocol simulation software block (76) associated with the selected target system. The OSI layers of the selected protocol simulation software block are then packaged into a protocol stack (77), and test messages are generated utilizing the protocol stack. A UNIX application is then utilized to simulate OSI layers 1 and 2, and a UNIX socket (78) is utilized to transmit the test messages over the network (79) to the selected target system.</p> |
