Forming machine, for e.g. pressing, plastic pressure injection moulding or die casting, has a forming die and/or platen (4) moving along guide bars (6) and an opposing die (2) which is fixed with reference to the machine bed. The novelty is a laser (12) measuring system (10) producing rays (16, 18, 20, 22), travelling back and forth across distances to be measured. Rays from the source are reflected back to individual detectors.
