Novel substituted benzenedithiol-metal complexes of general formula (1) which are useful as quenchers against singlet oxygen or optical information recording media wherein R is an organic group selected among those of general formulae (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv); M is a transition metal; and A<+> is a quaternary ammonium group: (i) (wherein R<1> is C1-C4 alkyl); (ii) (wherein n is 3, 4 or 5); (iii) and (iv) (wherein R<2> is hydrogen or a C1-C4 substituent).
