Process for eliminating halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons from waste waters, comprises direct photolysis of halogenated compounds such as tetra- and trichloroethylene by irradiation with short wavelength UV alone and photo-oxidation of non-halogenated aromatic and other harmful compounds such as phenol, xylol, formaldehyde, etc., by irradiation with short wavelength UV with the addition of an oxidising agent to cause complete decomposition or conversion into biodegradable products.
