The apparatus includes at least one light source for providing backlighting for an LCD panel and a light pipe receiving light generated by the source. The light pipe includes a flat front surface facing the panel, an end surface adjacent the source, and a back surface facing a direction opposite to a direction toward the LCD panel. The front surface extends along a longitudinal direction leading away from the source. The back surface has several parallel sections parallel to the front surface, and a connecting section connecting each two adjacent parallel section. A distance between the parallel sections and the front surface decreases with an increasing distance between the parallel sections and the end surface. The connecting section has at least two inclined surfaces, each surface being inclined toward a parallel section forming successive roof-shaped structures. These structures increase an angle between a normal vector of the inclined surfaces and an incident vector of an incident light, reducing a portion of the light exiting the light pipe. An angle between two adjacent inclined surfaces is between 60 to 120 degrees.
