Safe working areas in hospitals, chemists, research laboratories, etc. include a filter element through which air streams contaminated with suspended material forming a health hazard are passed. The housing (24) of the filter element (10) can be sealed on the dust-laden side before removal. Preferably the housing has a gas-tight pressure space (D) on the dust-laden air side upstream of the air entry level (E) of the filter pack (25), having a sealable throughflow aperture (32) and surrounded by gas-tight welded side walls (26) and a roof part (27) attached to the housing. A sealing plate (28) forms a guide (30) with the roof part for a sealing film.
