<p>The invention provides a wood preserving agent derived from an alcyonacean soft coral, Sinularia sp., and a method of using the agent, whether extracted from coral or obtained commercially to inhibit growth of a biofilm-forming organism and/or wood boring organism on wood or other substrate. The invention further includes a process of isolating the wood preserving agent from a soft coral. A wood preserving composition made essentially of a fatty acid ester, hexadecyl palmitate and/or octadecyl stearate, is also provided. Also provided is a kit containing the composition as separate ingredients or the prepared formulation in containing means, in combination with instructions for formulating and/or using the composition as a wood preservative and/or antifouling preparation.</p> |
