Abrasive Seal coatings

A composite ceramic coating 26 having abrasive properties for application to a metallic substrate such as an airfoil tip is provided which includes a ceramic matrix 34 and a plurality of ceramic abrasive particles 36 disposed within said ceramic matrix 34. The abrasive particles 36 have a shear strength substantially greater than that of the ceramic matrix 34 and possess an angular geometry. The coating is preferably plasma sprayed onto the substrate.
