PURPOSE:To obtain a sugar-coating composition which contains specific amounts of pentaerythritol and reduced starch-saccharified product and gives chewing gum, tablets or the like coated with a uniform-thickness layer having fine, smooth and peel-resistant crystals on the surface. CONSTITUTION:The core material is coated with a sugar-coating layer containing (A) 62 to 98wt.% (on the dry basis) of pentaerythritol and (B) 2 to 38wt.% of reduced starch-saccharified product to give the objective sugar- coating composition. The syrup for preparing the composition is preferably prepared using 45 to 57wt.% of pentaerythritol and 3 to 10wt.% of reduced starch-saccharified product on the dry basis.
