An anesthetic system (2) comprising an external gas reservoir (24) is described. Three gas bellows (28A-28C) are arranged in the external gas reservoir (24) to alternately collect or deliver breathing gas from and to a ventilator unit (6). In this manner a completely closed system is achieved with minimal consumption of, primarily, anesthetic. The bellows (28A-28C) are regulated by a regulatory unit (40) which, via a valve system (48), can selectively connect a source (44) of drive gas to one or a plurality of containers (30A-30C) in order to compress the gas bellows (28A-28C) contained therein.
