PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoder that decodes a code string of a multi-gradation image with a simple configuration, applies image processing to the decided staring depending on a type and a characteristics of an image and outputs an image with high quality. SOLUTION: A bit plane decoding section 20 applies decoding/recovery to a received code string by an arithmetic coding system and outputs the result to an image generating section 21 and a state number static section 23. When decoding for one bit plane is finished, the state number statistic section 23 counts the number of incidence for each state after decoding and an image decision section 24 decides a type and a characteristics or the like of the decoded image based on statistic information. The image generating section 21 synthesizes images for each of bit plane units decoded by the bit plane decoding section 20 to generate an entire image, and an output processing section 22 applies the image processing optimum to the image generated by the image generating section 21 and the image output characteristics based on the result of decision received from the image decision section 24. |
