PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-based coating composition which comprises a specific water-based acrylic resin and amino resin as essential components, has the surface hardness, processability, retort resistance required of a topcoat agent, and is excellent in application properties onto undried ink, this in useful for coating the outer surface of cans for food products. SOLUTION: This coating composition comprises, as essential components, (A) 100 pts.wt. of a water-based acrylic resin prepared by copolymerizing (A1 ) 5-30wt.% of anα,β-monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, for example, (meth)acrylic acid, maleic acid (anhydride) or monomethyl maleate, (A2 ) 10-50wt.% of a compound of the formula (X is H, methyl; R is a 7-17C alkyl or alkenyl) [for example, an esterification products of glycidyl (meth)acrylate with a 8-18C (un)saturated fatty acid] and a monomer radically copolymerizable with A1 and A2 and neutralizing at least partially the copolymer with a volatile base such as an alkylamine or alkanolamine and (B) 30-150 pts.wt. of an amino resin.
