PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound easily in a high yield, useful as a raw material for synthetic vitamin E. SOLUTION: This 2,3,5-trimethylhydroquinone is obtained by oxidizing 2,3,6- trimethylphenol with a ketone peroxide in the presence of a hetero-polyacid (e.g. phosphotungstic acid). The ketone peroxide used in the reaction is synthesized by reacting a ketone with hydrogen peroxide or by an autoxidation of secondary alcohols, and preferably contains at least one structure expressed by formula I, II (X is an integer of 1-4), etc. |
