PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound easily in a high yield, useful as a raw material for synthetic vitamin E. SOLUTION: This 2,3,5-trimethylhydroquinone is obtained by oxidizing 2,3,6- trimethylphenol with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a ketone with the co-presence of a hetero-polyacid containing tungsten as a coordinating atom (e.g. phosphotungstic acid). As the ketone used in the reaction is a 3-20C ketone expressed by formula I (R<1> , R<2> are each a 1-18C alkyl, phenyl, etc.) (e.g.; 3- buten-2-one), a 3-20C diketone expressed by formula II (n<1> is an integer of 0-16) (e.g.; 2,3-butanedione) and a cyclic ketone expressed by formula III [n<2> is an integer of 4-11; (m<1> +m<2> ) is an integer of 3-10] (e.g.; cyclopentanone) are cited. |
