PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an amount of ethylbenzene generated as by-product to sufficiently low level and obtain the subject compound in high selectivity by using a copper-based catalyst comprising a molded pellet having a specific diameter when acetophenone is hydrogenated by flow reaction using a fixed bed. SOLUTION: Acetophenone is hydrogenated preferably at 60-150 deg.C under 10-100kg/cm<2> pressure in the presence of a copper-based catalyst which is a molded pellet having <=3mm, preferably 1-2mm diameter. A complex oxide-based catalyst consisting essentially of CuO-Cr2 O3 and CuO-ZnO is preferably used as the copper-based catalyst. CuO content in the catalyst is preferably 20-80wt.%. The catalyst is prepared by heating, e.g. a paste obtained by coprecipitation method to afford catalyst powder, adding a binder such as alumina to the powder and carrying out tabletting molding or extrusion molding of the mixture. Furthermore, the catalyst is preferably used in 0.1-20hr<-1> space velocity of the raw material liquid to a catalyst layer. |
