PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change a picture reading processing in accordance with a picture recording system by providing a first set value where a density value becomes the lowest one when a luminance value is more than a prescribed value and the second set value where the density value becomes the highest when the luminance value is equal to below the prescribed value. SOLUTION: Luminance data (six-bit) is inputted to aγ-table 31 and also inputted to a comparator 32. The comparator 32 compares an individually set clamp value with inputted luminance data and outputs a selecting signal to a selector 33 based on the result. The selector 33 selects in which way an output is executed, that is, luminance data which is converted into density data by theγ-table 31 is outputted as it is, as whole 'zero' data or as whole 'one' data and outputs the selected density data to a halftone processing part. Here, theγ-table 31 is constituted of ROM where luminance data is adopted as an address and a data output is adopted as density data.
