PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely discriminate a character area, a photographic area and a dot area. SOLUTION: Image data from a CCD sensor 21 are sequentially stored in line memories 24-26. A level change detection circuit 28, a line direction pattern detection circuit 31, and an inter-line direction pattern detection circuit 32 detect a pattern of a density change in image data by 3 lines to detect a character area, a photographic area and a dot area from an image area consisting of the three lines. A matrix comparator circuit 33 discriminates a kind of an image of a center picture element of the matrix based on a density difference in the 3×3 matrix. A comparison discrimination circuit 34 discriminates an image type of only a picture element identified the same by both discrimination results to be an image type representing the result of discrimination. Since the image kind is discriminated by an AND condition of both discrimination results of a narrow image range and a wide image range. |
