PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid specific gravity and liquid amt. measuring method and apparatus simple in maintenance. SOLUTION: Parallel light is allowed to be incident on the liquid surface L of a liquid 2 to be inspected constituting a prism surface at a predetermined incident angleαand the permeated light from the liquid 2 to be inspected is incident on a photodetector through a convex lens 5 to form an image thereon and the refractive index of the liquid is calculated on the basis of the light detection position at this time and the height of the liquid surface is calculated on the basis of the light detection position where light is detected by the photodetector 4 in such a state that the convex lens 5 is detached and the calculated refractive index and the specific gravity and amt. of the liquid to be inspected are calculated from the refactive index and the height of the liquid surface.
