An angular velocity detector has first and second detecting electrodes 6a, 7a , symmetrically disposed with respect to a direction of excitation D2 of a piezoelectric oscillator 2 and adjacent to nodes of a first oscillation produced by the excitation. When the oscillator rotates, the detecting electrodes detect a second oscillation produced by the Coriolis force. A signal detected by electrode 6a will be lagging or leading in phase with respect to a signal detected by electrode 7a. An electrical circuit produces an angular rate signal which represents the phase difference between the two signals. Modifications are shown to improve the accuracy of detecting low angular velocities. In a first embodiment, electrodes 6a, 7a are offset by angle * small Greek theta * from nodes of the first oscillation. In other embodiments, the resonant frequencies of the first and second oscillations are made to be different, by giving the vibration and detection system different impedances (figs. 10), or providing the oscillator with weights Q (fig. 19) or notches R (fig. 22).
