Engine speed control during automatically-controlled gear shifts in a transmission

In a vehicle drive train comprising an engine, a disengageable clutch or other coupling and a variable-ratio gearbox, the engine speed is reduced in response to at least one initial stage 201 of automated shifting of said transmission into a selected gear and is increased during a next-following stage 202 of automated shifting of said transmission into said selected gear. The engine speed may be controlled to be in synchronism with the speed at of the input shaft of the gearbox. Gearshifting may be manually or automatically initiated.
