PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zirconia electrolyte excellent in various characteristics such as responsiveness to electromotive force, the stability of the wave-form of electromotive force, mechanical characteristics, thermal shock resistance and resistance to deterioration at low temp. as an electrolyte for an oxygen sensor for a molten metal. SOLUTION: This electrolyte is based on ZrO2 stabilized with MgO and Er2 O3 and/or Ho2 O3 as a rare earth metal oxide (R2 O3 ) and contains Al2 O3 and SiO2 . It has a compsn. consisting of, by outer %, 0.05-2mol% Al2 O3 , 0.05-2mol% SiO2 , 5-8.5mol% MgO, 0.1-5mol% R2 O3 and the balance ZrO2 . |
