PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To limit the incremental width of torque ratio of torque converter by slip controlling a lockup clutch in a torque converter. SOLUTION: Input torque calculation means 106a calculates the input torque of CVT according to signals from an engine speed sensor 100, input shaft rotational frequency sensor 101 and accelerator sensor 103. Lockup clutch control means 106 controls the slip quantity of lockup clutch so tint the input torque may not exceeds the set upper limit torque based on the torque capacity of CVT. The signal is output to a linear solenoid valve 97 for lockup control. AT the time of input of a lockup ON signal to the valve 97, the lockup clutch maintains engaging conditions. By limiting the torque ratio of torque converter in this way, largeness and high weight of CVT can be prevented.
