PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain at a low cost a higher fatty acid aryl ester compound industrially useful for producing an aromatic polycarbonate or as an intermediate for synthesizing an isocyanate. SOLUTION: This higher fatty acid aryl ester is expressed by the formula, R'-COO-Ar (R' is a >=7C alkyl; Ar is a nonsubstituted phenyl or a phenyl substituted with alkyls, halogens, etc.), e.g. phenyl octanoate. The compound is obtained by reacting a higher fatty acid alkyl ester (e.g. methyl octanoate) of the formula, R'-COO-R (R is methyl, ethyl or propyl) with an aromatic hydroxy compound (e.g. phenol) of the formula, Ar-OH in the presence of a catalyst at preferably 170-230 deg.C. The catalyst used for the reaction is preferably a titanium tetraaryl oxide of the formula, Ti(OA'r)4 (A'r is equal to Ar) or an adduct of the compound with an aromatic hydroxy compound. |
