PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject fiber having a light weight and a fire retarding property, and suitable for forming a composite material by covering a carbon fiber with a (semi) metal, etc., such as Ni, etc., and then removing the carbon fiber. SOLUTION: This hollow inorganic fiber having a hollow cavity at inside thereof, at most 15μm outer diameter of the fiber and 20-80% volume of the inside cavity, is obtained by covering the surface of a carbon fiber with at least one kind selected from metals such as Cu, Ag, Ni or their compounds containing the metals, semi metal elements (excluding carbon) or compounds containing the semi metals (excluding carbon) and then removing the carbon fiber.
