摘要 The cellular frequency band supporting a plurality of voice channels is divided into a plurality of frequency groups ([A] - [G]) each assigned to (i.e., reused in) multiple cells in a cellular telephone system. The voice channel allocated to a mobile station (20) comprises that channel selected from the frequency group for the cell (10) where the mobile station is currently located which has not concurrently been allocated (116) to another mobile station in a proximately located cell also assigned that same frequency group. The frequency groups may further be partitioned into a plurality of sub-sets (24) each being individually prioritized on a per cell basis such that proximate cells reusing the same frequency group have differing sub-set prioritizations. At channel allocation, a preference is given to those channels for the cell where the mobile station is currently located that have a higher sub-set prioritization. Such concurrent use and prioritization analyses serve to efficiently spread communications load across the cellular frequency band, and minimize the risk of co-channel interference.
