A process for the resolution of amminoesters of the formula wherein R1 and R3 have the meanings reported in the specification, by tartaric acid and analogs thereof, is described. The compounds of formula IV-A are intermediates useful in the preparation of optically active 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)ones.
