The invention concerns a compact disc (CD) player with a read device for picking up data stored on the CD, said read device comprising a read-write memory for recording playing characteristics entered from outside and a display device to show the playing time which has elapsed at a given instant. In order to widen the range of possible uses of the CD player, it is proposed that an input device connected to the read-write memory should be provided to allow selective marking of discrete points in time within a continuous recording, these selective markings being available for recall to modify the partial playing time of the medium when replayed.
