<p>A particle detector (10) employs a laser having a solid-state lasing medium (18), such as an Nd: YAD crystal, and includes an intra-cavity view volume (26). The resonant cavity (12) is defined by two mirrors (42, 48) with the laser medium (18) between them. The view volume (26) is positioned in the light path (24) to introduce particles (27) into the resonant cavity so that light impinging thereupon produces scattered light. A detector (28) is disposed to sense light scattered from the particles (27). A displaying device, such as a pulse height analyzer (30), receives the signals produced by the detector to display the intensity of the light sensed. A harmonic generator (50; 68) can be disposed within the light path (24) to shorten the wavelength of light impinging upon the particles (27), making the detector more sensitive to particles of sub-micron size.</p> |
