Two-stroke spark ignition internal combustion engine with combustion control

The two-stroke internal combustion engine has a rotary supplementary chamber (20) at the top of the cylinder space. The chamber can rotate between a position where it is open to the cylinder and a position where it is closed off from the cylinder. This allows the effective volume of the cylinder to be varied. The effective cylinder volume is varied as a function of the state of the engine. A valve (24) controls the area of the exhaust passage in response to engine speed. The cylinder volume is controlled to allow fuller combustion through auto-ignition of the part-burnt gas.
