The method involves using a measurement parameter characteristic of the action of the ignition on the combustion in the engine. The parameter is measured in the primary or secondary circuit of the ignition system. The measurement parameter indicates the uniformity of gas mixture ignition and/or the possible non-ignition of the mixture if the ignition energy is insufficient. The measurement parameter can be an electrical parameter, e.g. the ignition voltage in the primary circuit, measured for successive engine cycles.
