The switching device has a selection lever displaced relative to a switching guide by pivoting the lever about an underlying axis (4), with a spring bias providing sidewards displacement of the switching lever into each of the different gear ratio positions spaced along the guide. The selection axis of the selection lever is supported via a universal linkage in an intermediate component (5), in turn supported within a housing (1) secured to the vehicle chassis, so that when the selection lever is in a manual gear selection position it pivots about a higher pivot axis (6) for operating gear selection contacts.
