The device has a closure member for automatically closing a hose or conduit for transporting fluid medium esp. water when a signal is received. The signal is generated when e.g. a predetermined threshold monitored by a sensor is exceeded and is generated by the sensor or by circuitry connected to the sensor. At least two moisture sensors (4) are arranged in the floor region (11) of a space or building to be protected, which has several tap points. The closure member (3) is arranged in the central line (1) to the tap points. Preferably in the central line (1) there is also a volume flow measuring device which provides electric signals depending on the flow volume through the hose and the period of flow. The signals are fed to a control device (5) which controls the closure member (3) in accordance with a predetermined program.
