The edges of the dental impression tray are shaped so that they, together with the soft tissues of the gums, enclose a sealed area. The tray incorporates at least one connection (32,34,36) which connects the sealed area to a vacuum source (90,92). The tray further has a number of connections (30), which connect the tray to a supply (94-108) of liquid casting material which sets and hardens in the tray. The vacuum source provides a vacuum of 10 to 500 mbar. A vacuum controller (90) is mounted near the connection.
