Starter pinion for internal combustion engine

The starter pinion (18) has a sliding mounting inside the starter motor housing, with the pinion gear at one end and with a splined sleeve (36) at the other end to sit on the starter motor shaft. The main body of the pinion is a cylindrical section (44) mounted on an inner elastic sleeve (40) to provide torsion flexibility. The elastic sleeve has a grooved outer profile which sits in a correspondingly shaped bore in the main body of the pinion. It is moulded in one piece with a flange sleeve (34) which fits over the splined section. The starter pinion throw-out lever grips between the two flanges (28,26).
