In a process to clean industrial waste water containing particularly dissolved organic matter including starch or cellulose, the effluent water is first mixed with a suitable adsorption agent selected to match the nature of the dissolved matter. The effluent and absorbents are then discharged to a sedimentation tank. The quantity of adsorbent is mixed with the effluent in proportion to the pollution load in a pre-determined ratio. The sedimentation rate is measured, after the elapse of a pre-determined interval, and the quotient of these two values used as the pollution load coefficient. When treating the water in stages, the pollution load is determined at each stage before mixing with the adsorption agent, using a water sample to which has been added a pre-determined quantity of the adsorption agent, the appropriate quantity of adsorption agent is then added to the volume of water under treatment. The pH is maintained constant at each treatment stage or the quantity of adsorption agent is adapted to changes in pH value. |
