A process for making a flexographic printing plate involves: (1) providing a photosensitive printing element having, in order: (a) an IR-transparent support, (b) an IR-transparent photopolymerisable layer contg.: (i) an elastomeric binder, (ii) a monomer, and (iii) an initiator sensitive to non-IR actinic radiation, the layer being soluble, swellable or dispersible in a developer soln.; and (c) an IR sensitive material layer contg. a self-ablative binder, the layer being opaque to non-IR radiation; (2) placing a material capture sheet in proximity of layer (c); (3) imagewise ablating layer (c) through layers (a) and (b) using IR laser radiation to form a mask; (4) removing the material capture sheet; (5) overall exposing the photosensitive element to actinic radiation through the mask; and (6) treating the element with developer to remove the IR sensitive material which was not ablated in step (3) and the areas of the photopolymerisable layer which were not exposed to active radiation. Also claimed is a process for making a flexographic printing plate using a printing element comprising a cover sheet. |
