PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water swelling rubber having a smaller difference than the conventional one between the volume change by the absorption of aq. liq. such as artificial seawater and the volume change by the absorption of pure water such as ion-exchanged water and having a lower content of soluble org. carbon than the conventional one. SOLUTION: This water swelling rubber is obtd. by mixing a hygroscopic resin having a mean particle diameter within the range of 1-100μm and obtd. by polymerizing a monomer component comprising a nonionic monomer 20-100wt.% and a polyvalent metal salt of an anionic monomer 80-0wt.%, and an elastomer. The ratio of the volume change by the absorption of ion- exchanged water to the volume change by the absorption of an artificial seawater of thus obtd. water swelling rubber is in the range of 1.0-2.0.
