A waveguide comprises a monomode optical fibre (1) with a reduced diameter, consisting of a core (2) for guiding the majority of the light rays, surrounded by an optical sleeve (3). The difference between the maximum refractive index of the core and that of the optical sleeve is equal to or greater than 0.01. The diameter of the optical sleeve is between 50 and 100 micrometres. The core may have a profile which may be a stepped profile, a trapezium section or a triangular section. The core and optical sleeve are surrounded by a protective coating of synthetic material of thickness approximately 50 micrometres. |
