Preparation of isophorone from acetone takes place: (i) in the liquid phase in presence of a magnesium-aluminium double oxide of formula Mg1-xAlxO1+x (III); or (ii) in the liquid or gas phase in presence of a magnesium-aluminium double hydroxide catalyst of formula (I). x = 0.20-0.33; n < 1
